Auditory Illusion - In

5

Illusions can take the form of optical as well as aural. Aural or auditory illusions are the equivalent of optical illusions, in which the ear perceives a sound that either doesn't exist or is actually impossible. YouTube user JoeFreeza has uploaded an example of this with a piece of audio that doesn't seem to stop increasing in pitch. See, or rather, hear it for yourself!

Illusion? Magic? Or Self-Mutilation?

4

In this African tribal get-together, one man is seen with a magic(?) sword through his neck. His face seems to be locked in paralysis while his arms and head are being held back by someone else in what seems to be like an attempt to keep the sword from damaging the innards of his neck. The cut is shown at different angles, and we get more than a healthy view of the damage and state of shock.

Anamorphic Illusion Art

5

A madman has drawn these pictures, a madman! This incredible clip is comprised of a series of images that have been skewed and twisted, and only appear normal as a reflection off of a cylindrical mirror. I can imagine how these may be drawn out in modern times. Perhaps they draw it out normally first, and twist it later digitally.

Union Square Subway Illusion (Video)

2.666665

YouTube user brunch43 filmed the number 4 (or 5?) and 6 trains departing at the same time. The motion was captured from directly behind and it seems as though as the two trains are on a crash collision course towards each other.

The Magazine Kiss Illusion

3.333335

Now this is an illusion you can do right now at home! All you need is a magazine and someone to take a picture of you. You can probably even get away with using the self-timer on your camera. If you try it out and it works out well, why not post it here on The Illusionist? We'd love to see what home-made photo illusions you can come up with!

The Graffiti Stairs Illusion

4.5

At first glance this may seem like a real set of stairs, but alas, it is an illusion in the form of Trompe L'oeil. It wouldn't be posted here otherwise! This invisible set of stairs have been graffiti'd on a wall and floor in a very artistic way. The splatter-paint effect gives a nice comic-like feel to what otherwise would have been a dull white hallway.

Invisible Car

5

It may not be surprising if Sara Watson from the University of Central Lancashire had trouble finding her car in the parking lot (or car park, as they say in the UK) after creating this project. She spray painted an old Skoda Fabia to match the pavement and background as part of an art project for her drawing and image making course.

The Cardiograph Magic Trick

5

Magician Mark Mauricio freaks his audience out with his take on the cardiograph magic trick. He has one audience member write her name on a card (known to both magician and audience). Another audience member selects another random card. Mark proceeds to use "mentalism" to read the random card without looking at it and then draw it on a card.
