Optical Illusions

The Graffiti Stairs Illusion

4.5

At first glance this may seem like a real set of stairs, but alas, it is an illusion in the form of Trompe L'oeil. It wouldn't be posted here otherwise! This invisible set of stairs have been graffiti'd on a wall and floor in a very artistic way. The splatter-paint effect gives a nice comic-like feel to what otherwise would have been a dull white hallway.

Invisible Car

5

It may not be surprising if Sara Watson from the University of Central Lancashire had trouble finding her car in the parking lot (or car park, as they say in the UK) after creating this project. She spray painted an old Skoda Fabia to match the pavement and background as part of an art project for her drawing and image making course.

The Magic Arc By Steve Splanger

4

Steve Splanger explains the science behind the magic arc and why the eye always perceives the bottom arc to be longer than the top one. The same trick can be done with bananas or any other pair of objects that have an arc to their shape.

Curry's Paradox

5

I remember being given this puzzle, but never the solution, back in Grade 8. Now my mind can finally rest in peace as I have finally found the solution. It turns out that there really is no geometrical trick behind this. The two triangles have a slight kink in them, either up or down, and the total area makes up for the missing square.

The Pac-Man Illusion

5

Another brusspup creation, The Pac-Man Illusion is a painted (or tape?) set up where different features of the Pac-Man arcade scene are painted in different parts of the house to reveal a whole, complete scene when looked at from a distance. Upon closer inspection, the illusion breaks down.

The Nuts and Pen Escheresque Illusion

5

YouTube user, brusspup, seems to have a lot of time on his hands. He is well-known for high-viewcount illusions on YouTube that are all homemade. This video features two nuts that were made out of paper and designed to create the illusion that the pen is going through the nuts in physics-defying ways. The setup is fittingly Escheresque.

Amazing Fire Illusion

"Last time my mind did something like this...I was watching Inception."

Make sure to watch the video to the end: the illusion is fantastic. Candles are set up to reveal a cube when looked at from a certain perspective.
